Any of several fat-soluble organic compounds having as a basis 17 carbon atoms in four rings; many have important physiological effects. Steroid tablets (cortisone or corticosteroids) work mainly by reducing inflammation. They are used to treat various conditions where inflammation occurs. For example: some auto-immune diseases; some types of muscle, skin, and joint diseases; asthma; etc. Steroids are also used to treat some cancers. Prednisolone is the common steroid tablet. The outlook (prognosis) for a number of diseases has improved, sometimes dramatically, since steroids became available.

Some general points about steroid tablets

bullet Side-effects are more likely to occur if you take a long course of steroids (more than 2-3 months), or if you take short courses repeatedly. A short course of steroids usually causes no side-effects. For example, a 1-2 week course is often prescribed to ease a severe attack of asthma. This is usually taken without any problems
bullet The higher the dose, the greater the risk of side-effects. This is why the lowest possible dose which controls symptoms is aimed for if you need steroids long-term. Some diseases need a higher dose to control symptoms than others. Even for the same disease, the dose needed often varies from person to person.
bullet A common treatment plan is to start with a high dose to control symptoms. Often the dose is then slowly reduced to a lower daily dose that keeps symptoms away. The length of treatment can vary, depending on the disease. Sometimes the steroid treatment is gradually stopped if the condition improves. However, steroids are needed for life for some conditions as symptoms return if the steroids are stopped.
bullet The type of steroids used to treat disease are called corticosteroids. They are different to the 'anabolic' steroids which some athletes and bodybuilders use. Anabolic steroids have very different effects.
Criticism of steroids

For many diseases, the benefit of taking steroids usually outweigh the side-effects. Possible side-effects include the following. Most common side affect include Osteoporosis, weight gain, increased chance of infections, increase in blood pressure. high blood sugar, skin problems, muscle weakness, mood changes, an increased risk of duodenal and stomach ulcers, and those who use Steroids for a long time may develop withdrawal symptoms if they stop it

bullet Osteoporosis ('thinning of the bones'). However, treatment can help to protect against this if the risk is high. For example, you can take a medicine to help prevent bone loss.
bullet Weight gain. You may also develop a 'puffiness' around the face.
bullet Increased chance of infections as steroids may suppress the immune system. Example: you are at risk of having a severe form of chickenpox if you have not had chickenpox in the past (and so are not immune). Most people have chickenpox as a child and are immune to it. Also, tuberculosis (TB) may flare up again if you had it in the past, even many years ago.
bullet Increase in blood pressure. So have your blood pressure checked regularly.
bullet High blood sugar  Steroids may occasionally cause diabetes.
bullet Skin problems such as poor healing after injuries, thinning skin, and easy bruising. Stretch marks sometimes develop.
bullet Muscle weakness.
bullet Mood changes. Some people actually feel better in themselves when they take steroids. However, steroids may aggravate depression and other mental health problems.
bullet An increased risk of duodenal and stomach ulcers. Causes  abdominal (stomach) pains.

The above are only possible side-effects which may affect some people who take steroids. In life threatening disease there is often a balance between the risk of side-effects of steriods against the symptoms and damage that may result from some diseases if they are not treated.

bullet You may get serious withdrawal effects once your body is used to the steroids. These may develop within a few days if you stop steroid tablets abruptly. Any change in dose should be supervised by a doctor. Any reductions in dose are done slowly, over a number of weeks.                                                                                                                 Your body normally makes steroid chemicals by itself which are necessary to be healthy. When you take steroid tablets for a few weeks or more, your body may reduce or stop making its own steroid chemicals. If you then stop taking steroid tablets suddenly, your body does not have any steroids. This can cause various 'withdrawal' symptoms until your body resumes making natural steroids over a few weeks. The withdrawal symptoms can be serious, even life-threatening and include: weakness, tiredness, feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, low blood sugar, and low blood pressure which can cause dizziness, fainting or collapse.

If the dose is reduced gradually, the body gradually resumes it's natural production of steroids and the withdrawal symptoms do not occur.

NOTE: General classification of  allopathy drugs

The only point I want in discussing antibiotics and steroids bring different effect than disease  to be treated.

What can be applied in disease is laws and principles of cure which is foundation of Homoeopathy.

It is only by experience of the phenomena it displays when acting on the state of health of man that we can become clearly cognizant of it.

Both allopathy and homoeopathy are experienced in both their respective field. The former knows that since drug are able to cure such diseases in majority of animals and also humans it becomes their drug for that particular disease. They are experienced in that. They know that. What allopathy lacks is principles and laws. Homoeopathy has principles and laws and they are experienced in both principles and laws.

Curative property of a drug is ability of that drug to produce similar changes in healthy body. Take for example what is the curative property of  Belladona in delirium during fever. Belladonna when given to healthy person can produce sudden and violent onset of fever. With fever we can see that there is a redness of face, with throbbing of carotids. With fever there may be chill which is not relived by heat of stove. Sweat if present only on covered parts and on head and some of the provers did not have sweat at all. The provers developed delirium. Classical description of Kent
  - Full of imaginations.
- Sees ghosts, and spirits, and officers, and wild things.
                                         - In the early part of the fever the delirium is very violent and excitable; but as it passes on he goes into a sleep, a sort of half-slumber, a semi-comatose state.
  - Apparently in a dream, and he screams out.
  - Dreams horrible things.
- Sees in his dreams the things that he talks about.
  - When he has real sleep, or resting, as near as it is for him to rest, he has violent dreams; night-mare.
  - Sees things on fire.
  - He is in a delirium, and in torment.
  - He becomes stupid at times, appears to lose consciousness.
- Loses the memory of all things and then becomes wild.
  - His delirium goes on when he appears to be sleeping.
  - These symptoms often occur with cerebral congestion the violent cerebral congestion of the infant.
- If they are old enough to talk they will talk about the hammering in the head. - In Bell. the infant also commonly remains in a profound stupor, the profound stupor that goes with congestion of the brain; pupils dilated; skin hot and dry; face red, throbbing carotids.
- Finally the child becomes pale as the stupor increases and the neck is drawn back, because as it progresses the base of the brain and spine become involved, and the muscles of the neck contract, drawing the head backwards, and he rolls the head; eyes staring, pupils dilated.

Proving of medicine

There is only one way of finding out what arsenicum album  will do to the CURE A DISEASE, and that is to give it to many men and note the symptoms that these men experience as the manifestations of arsencum album.

It is first essential to know that drugs can make man sick, and next to know what that state of sickness is. Every medicine that a homoeopath uses should have been thoroughly proven upon the healthy so that its symptom image shall have been thoroughly brought out. Kent says "It is a burning shame upon the homoeopathic profession that so large a number of drugs exist in the homoeopathic pharmacies, and that these drugs are recommended for such and such diseases without any investigation as to their properties, other than perhaps that Dr. So-and-So, on the recommendation of some old woman, has used this or that drug for dropsy."

Such a thing is  decried in every line of the Organon and by every doctrine. There is no principle in it, it is unscientific, and unworthy  a doctor, for that is like practising allopathy on homoeopathic foundation. Every drug must be thoroughly proven upon the healthy.

In our study of the Materia Medica do not pay attention to  partially proved drugs. Don't become familiar with unproved drugs. When books tell you that drug is good for this or that or any type of pathology pay no attention to them, but when book tells you that a drug has produced such and such  symptoms in healthy human being, study  these; that is a piece of valuable information.
